NEWS RELEASE from The City of Frederick
FREDERICK, MD – July 30, 2019: Mayor Michael O’Connor announces a milestone achievement in the City’s sustainability program with the recognition today that the City earned the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED for Cities certification.
One of USGBC’s primary goals is to expand sustainable, healthy and resilient communities, cities and cultures. By certifying under LEED for Cities, Frederick is “recognized as a leader for … outstanding sustainability performance,” according to the Council report.
LEED for Cities Certification demonstrates a commitment to sustainable growth and progress, measured in standards of energy and resource conservation, transportation initiatives and quality of life. Certifying the City, the USGBC took into account our Sustainability Plan, Carbon Reduction Plan, Disaster Preparedness Plan, Electrical Vehicle Plan, Watershed Master Plan, Frederick Community Action Agency services, historic preservation, stream restoration, composting and recycling initiatives.
“Every City department deserves credit for this achievement,” said Mayor Michael O’Connor. “This is a powerful endorsement for the work our City is doing to improve our overall environmental and sustainability position. I could not be more proud of the Sustainability Program, Program Manager Jenny Willoughby, and our community, for being part of this progress.”
During the USGBC’s public announcement at Winchester Hall on July 30, Frederick County was also recognized as a LEED-certified Community.
