Frederick: Home of National Parks Services' Historic Preservation Training Center

We never cease to be amazed by all the cool resources right here in Frederick!

Did you know our city is home to the National Park Service’s Historical Preservation Training Center?

The Frederick facility serves as the headquarters for the program’s sixteen locations nationwide and supports the preservation & maintenance of over 400 historically significant parks across the country.

Though currently located downtown at 106 Commerce Street, in the future the HPTC plans to relocate to a 43,000 SF facility to be built at Westside Regional Park.

The organization has three main branches:

  • Preservation Trades Services -- which conducts hands-on trades projects involving skills including woodworking, millwork, masonry, metalwork, carpentry, and work on historic monuments.

  • Technical Services -- which focuses on planning, design, and construction.

  • Learning Services -- which teaches hands-on craft in tandem with preservation principles to ensure that participants have the skills, knowledge, and connection needed to properly care for NPS heritage resources.

The Frederick-based HPTC provides internships, training for preservation professionals and even a Skillbridge training program specifically designed to help active-duty military with career transition.
