Frederick, Maryland is a well-established life science hub with more than 130 bio companies and globally renowned research facilities including Fort Detrick and the Frederick National Laboratories for Cancer Research.
Within the local life science cluster, a wave of companies is experiencing tremendous growth. Below we explore just six Frederick life science businesses that have recently expanded their footprints and/or funding sources in a major way.
Precision for Medicine
Precision for Medicine is a biomarker-driven clinical research company that supports life sciences companies. The global company recently celebrated the completion of a major expansion to its laboratory campus in The City of Frederick.
This year, the company signed a lease to expand with St. John Properties, Inc., taking on an additional 41,040 square feet at 8440 Broadband Drive within Riverside Tech Park. Now encompassing over 116,000 square feet at Riverside Tech Park, the new facility offers significantly increased capacity and scale across both biorepository and laboratory services, with particular focus on cell and gene therapy, oncology and viral research.

2. BioFactura
Biofactura develops and manufactures high-value biosimiliars, biodefense medical countermeasures, and client-selected novel drugs. The growing company got its start here in Frederick — in the local tech incubator, Frederick Innovative Technology Center Inc.
This year the company signed a lease for an additional 12,000 SF at Riverside Tech Park — more than tripling its facility space in Frederick and bringing BioFactura’s total presence in the park to 17,520 square feet.
The company currently employs 43 and is actively hiring to meet the demands of the expansion.

3. Tonix Pharmaceuticals
Tonix is a biopharmaceutical company focused on developing novel therapeutics to prevent and treat central nervous system disorders, immunology conditions, infectious diseases, and rare diseases.
In 2021, Tonix Pharmaceuticals acquired a 48,000 SF facility in The City of Frederick to serve as a state-of-the-art infectious disease research and development center to expand its pipeline of life-saving vaccines and antiviral therapeautics.
This summer, the company signed a 5-year deal with the Department of Defense Threat Reduction Agency to develop a small molecule broad-spectrum antiviral agents for the prevention or treatment of infections to improve the readiness of military personnel in biological threat environments. The contracting vehicle offers as much as $34 million in funding to the company over five years.

4. Medigen
Medigen is a vaccine development company. The company’s work has helped advance the scientific knowledge of viruses, processes, and immune systems needed to develop new biopharmaceutical products for treatment and prevention. Medigen's vaccines are intended primarily for high-impact pathogens capable of causing global epidemics and pandemics, and can be used by the first responders and emergency personnel, travelers and local populations in the affected areas.
Founded in 2004, the growing company doubled its space in Riverside Tech Park in 2022 — bringing its total footprint to 12,000 SF.

5. SriSai Biopharmaceutical Solutions LLC
SRISAI provides Clinical and Commercial Supply Management services for the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. The company supports clinical trials storing samples in temperature-controlled freezers and refrigerators.
This past December, the City of Frederick-based life science company acquired a second facility at 7320 Executive Way in Frederick County. The new space features 40,000 SF of space, with one existing building tenant occupying a 16,000 SF laboratory. SRISAI will expand its operations into the remaining two thirds of the building.
SRI SAI will also maintain its corporate headquarter location in the city.

6. Phycin Inc.
Phycin Inc. has developed an innovative method for producing growth factors in green algea. This innovation supports the growing demands found in several industries, including regenerative medicine, cultivate meat, cosmetics, and more.
Currently a member at the Frederick Innovative Technology Center Inc., the growing company recently was a awarded a $200,000 Pre-Seed Building Fund investment from TEDCO.
