Recognizing the unique impact of our giving community, The City of Frederick created the Community Promotion Grant in 2017 to uplift and support our local nonprofits. The Community Promotion Grant cycle begins every year in the fall, offering nonprofits an opportunity to fund existing initiatives or pilot something new.
When their sports career comes to a close, former athletes must look for the next goal. A number of sportsmen choose to dive into the business world. For those that brave the transition, many find that of the championship habits and mindsets learned on the sports field translate powerfully to the workplace.
Our business community is fortunate to lean on a robust system of 75 parks and 6 recreation sites across all neighborhoods in the City. 97% of City residents are within a 10-minute walk or less from a Parks and Recreation amenity. The City’s Parks and Recreation Department offers unique and expanding programming across those areas throughout the year for all ages, and ability levels.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), the outdoor recreation economy produced a record $682 billion in economic output, 4.5 million jobs, and 1.9% of the total U.S. GDP in 2021.
We caught up with 4 local businesses that are exclusively dedicated to the outdoor recreation and asked them to share news from the industry, and a few tricks of the trade for Frederick residents wanting to join in the fun this summer.
With bicycle-friendly city streets, easy access to the C&O canal, beautiful rolling countryside & mountain trails, and one-of-a-kind cycling festivals, Frederick has become a world-renowned destination for peddlers of all varieties and skill levels.

Maryland’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) provides support to local entrepreneurs and small businesses. In addition to providing free individual consultation, the organization hosts comprehensive training programs with most classes at low to no cost.

Frederick is well-known for its downtown historic district, but it’s heritage and charm is not limited to a 50 square-block area. Instead, the City is fortunate to have significant historic assets dotted throughout its jurisdiction and contributing to the unique character of the entire community.

The Frederick facility serves as the headquarters for the program’s sixteen locations nationwide and supports the preservation & maintenance of over 400 historically significant parks across the country!
